What temperature do you keep your thermostat set at in winter?

What temperature do you keep your thermostat set at in the winter?

This is a common question an energy auditor will ask during the homeowner interview. We pulled the data from the last 100 homes we have audited and put the numbers in the chart below. Are you surprised by the data? The lowest setting was a brisk 55 degrees and the highest setting was a toasty 80 degrees. Almost 60% of respondents preferred a range between 68 and 72 degrees.

What’s right for your home? It depends. It will depend on comfort preferences of family members and even health requirements for those with medical issues. For energy savings, the lower you keep the thermostat, the less need for the heating system to run, and the more money you save! However, you should not get so low as to sacrifice comfort or negatively impact health.
