Looking for training in the home performance and building science fields? Midwest Building Performance is a BPI Test Center and offers training courses including:

BPI’s Building Science Principles – To be determined.

An entry level course that introduces the field of home performance covering heat transfer, airflow, moisture management, heating & cooling systems, and conservation strategies.  This course is designed for those new to the field, for those preparing for the advanced classes, and for those who need knowledge but not the technical certifications.

Combustion Safety Testing – Lessons Learned from the Trenches

Next class: to be determined

Eligible for 3.25 BPI CEUs

A critical component of evaluating a home for health & safety hazards occurs during the combustion safety testing. Gas leaks and back-drafting chimneys of water heaters and furnaces put contaminants into the indoor air that can make occupants ill and even be fatal. While some problems may not be present initially, modifying the home with air sealing, insulation, and ventilation may cause problems at the end of the job and complicate the ability to sign off and receive payment for the work. We will review the BPI 1200 procedures for conducting a combustion appliance inspection and go over many techniques during the initial inspection that can help prevent failure at the end of the job!

Ventilation for Better Indoor Air Quality

Next class: to be determined

Eligible for 3.25 BPI CEUs

Providing adequate ventilation for homes is a key component of home performance upgrades. Tightly constructed homes are more energy efficient, but it’s important to consider what the impacts are on the quality of the indoor air. We will learn about the different types of contaminants found in the indoor air and how ventilation strategies can help mitigate some of them to minimize negative health impacts for the occupants. Topics include indoor air quality, exhaust fans, supply ventilation, energy recovery ventilators (ERVs), and heat recovery ventilators (HRVs).
